Germs can spread like wildfire, especially during this time of year. That’s why national hand washing safety week is gearing up to keep the germs down. Ryan Loyd has more in today's Safe Family report.

It’s not Emma’s birthday for another two months, but she's singing the birthday song with Cathryn to know exactly how long it takes to wash her hands properly.

"Wash your hands in between fingers, we teach soap and running water. When you sing ‘Happy Birthday,’ it gives them enough time to get your hands washed," Cathryn Schmidt, who runs a day care, says.

This week is National Hand washing Safety Week, and believe it or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to wash your hands.

Cathryn Schmidt runs a day care with several children, and in day cares, it's especially important to keep those hands washed.

She says now that the kids are getting older, it's easier to keep their hands clean because they can do it for themselves. It’s a life skill.

"They’re learning how to do it really well at home."

Making sure you always wash your hands at the office and at home will decrease your risk of getting sick during a season where so many germs are being spread.

During National Hand washing Safety Week, make it a priority to make hand washing a habit.
