Safe Family: Getting enough sleep

With everyone always on the go, sleep is becoming less of a priority. But when you hit the road, you'd better be plenty rested. Ryan Loyd explains in today's Safe Family report.

Millions of drivers are on the road every single day so the odds are pretty good that some drivers are not well-rested enough to be behind the wheel.

"If you kill someone, you could be charged with manslaughter," Sherman Police Sgt. Bruce Dawsey says.

Sleep is important when it comes to driving, especially if you're taking a long trip but even between small destinations, driving while you're tired is dangerous to you and those around you.

If you know about an upcoming trip, don't stay up all night before heading out. Take time to get plenty of rest because fatigue not only affects your driving but it can greatly alter your performance at work and during other activities.

Short-term solutions won't always work to keep you safe.

"Slapping yourself in the face won't cut it. Drinking a cup of coffee isn't the solution," says Dawsey.

Sleep isn't always the top priority for people with busy schedules but making time for it will help you have a better attitude, will improve your performance, and will get you to your destination safely.
