Keeping your kids safe is the goal of a bike rodeo to be held this Saturday, but before you head out to the Sherman Municipal Grounds, we have a lesson for your children. So kids, listen up.

Police say bicycle accidents are common, and you can be seriously hurt if you're involved in one.

"Let them know they need to be aware of cars, see if we can cut down on accidents," says Sherman Police Sgt. Bruce Dawsey.

Bicycles can seem harmless, but police say to be cautious and be smart. You must follow the rules of the road and always follow all safety requirements.

"Traffic rules apply. Go the same direction as cars. Use turn signals with hands," Sgt. Dawsey says.

The Sherman Police Department, along with State Farm Insurance and Sherman Parks and Recreation will be sponsoring a bike rodeo this Saturday to help make children aware of all the rules they must follow and to equip them with knowledge and know-how.

The rodeo will be this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Sherman Municipal Grounds. Bring your bike, learn about bike safety, and test your riding skills on the safety course.

"We’ll have an inspection point, and we'll put them through a test," Dawsey says of the course.

The first 200 participants will even get free bicycle helmets and water bottles and enter a drawing to win one of two bicycles donated by Academy Sports & Outdoor.

Stay safe this summer and be prepared for the road ahead.
