Friday is Halloween and for most of us that means passing out the treats, and trying to avoid the tricks. Josh Stevenson has some tips on how to make it a safe Halloween in today’s Safe Family report.

Halloween safety is a popular subject around this time of year, but making it a safe Halloween for everyone is not just the responsibility of those trick-or-treating, it is also for those of us passing out the treats as well.

"Turn your porch light on and have it light up so that if someone has to go up steps to a porch, that you have in adequate light so that no one trips and falls," Sgt. Bruce Dawsey of the Sherman Police Department says.

Never have open flames in an area where kids and costumes are near. Many costumes are flammable.

It is also a good idea to have a holiday plan for your pets.

“If you have a dog, make sure that dog is put away, especially if it’s the kind of dog that will rush the door when you open it," Dawsey says.

Finally, nothing can ruin your Halloween night like having your decorations stolen, or your jack-o-lanterns smashed in the street, so take some precautions.

"You want to be able to decorate and celebrate whatever holiday it is, but the further your decorations are from the house and closer to the street, the easier it is for someone to pick them up and make off with them."
