07-20-06 - Owning a swimming pool is terrific, but don't forget, it's also a huge responsibility.
Swimming pools can be dangerous. Each year, 300 children under the age of 5 are killed in swimming pool related injuries, and another 2,000 end up in the emergency room.
Having a fence around your pool is a great way to keep kids out. Though it's not fool proof, it can be very effective.
There are safety procedures you could use for your kids, too. Be sure you have them wear flotation devices, even if they've had swimming lessons. Children are not drow-proof because they've been taught to swim.
Always keep a close eye on your children when their in the pool. Floatation devices can never replace good adult supervision.
You can keep the splash, while keeping it safe. Just take the right precautions.
