SHERMAN, Tex. ― When seconds count would your children know what to do? Would your small children know how to call 911 when it matters? Josh Stevenson has more in our Safe Family report.
You never know when an emergency is going to happen, or to whom, so it is important that everyone in your home knows how to dial 911, including the kids.
"It’s important for parents to discuss with their kids what to do in an emergency if they are home alone or if mom should get hurt or something, how to dial 911 and to stay calm," Sgt. Bruce Dawsey of the Sherman Police Department says.
Remember it is just as important to teach your kids when not to call 911.
"But as they teach this lesson it’s real important for them to stress not to play on 911, each time we get a 911 call, officers respond," says Dawsey.
There have been many documented cases of young children saving the life of a parent or grandparent by calling 911. Talking your kids about when to dial 911 and what to tell the operator on the other end could make all the difference
"Being calm and being able to say what the problem is if it’s a small child being able to say mommy fell is enough information for us to get somebody rolling."
