Safe Family: Safe driving

More than 11 million crashes take place on U.S. roads every year, and most crashes are a direct result of dangerous driving. In today's Safe Family report we look at how you can prevent tragedies behind the wheel.

Driving is serious business. More than 40,000 people are killed every year in car wrecks, and the most concerning part of that statistic is that most of these accidents could have been prevented.

Pay attention. The first thing to remember when you hit the road is to pay attention. One of the most common things you hear after an accident is the driver never saw it coming.

Do not speed. Whatever you do, never speed. This sounds like an obvious measure to take, but it's far too often the cause of a collision.

Wear your seat belt. It's never a good idea to not buckle up, and in a situation where you cannot avoid an accident it may be the one thing that saves your life.

Do not drive too closely. One thing you might not think about is driving too closely behind another vehicle. Put at least a car’s length between your vehicle and the driver ahead of you.

Driving is not only a big responsibility― it should be considered a privilege. Remember to be careful when you're out on the road because there's a good chance other drivers won't.

This is a wonderful story. I wish other stations around the country were doing pieces like this. Our recommendation is that people follow the 3-second rule in follow the car in front of them. The officer in your story recommends 2-seconds. We feel that three seconds is a safer following distance. Thank you for the nice story.
