The study by Javelin Strategy and Research says the number of reported identity theft cases jumped 22% last year to over 9 million.
The report also says the cost per incident, including unrecovered losses and legal fees, fell 31 %, to less than $500.
"Get a shredder, make sure you don't put credit card applications in the trash without shredding them first. When you're done with bank statements, shred them and don't give out your social security number or credit card number over a cell phone,” advises Russ Wilson with Allstate Insurance.
One reason for the spike in the number of cases is current tough economic conditions.
