In today's Safe Family report, the Denison city council has taken a big step to help keep your children safe. We all know that talking on your cell phone while driving your car can be a little distracting, but what about when you are driving through a school zone with kids crossing the street?

A University of Utah study says that talking on a cell phone reduces your driving ability to that of a drunk driver.

In an effort to avoid distracted drivers around schools, the Denison city council banned talking on a hand held cell phone while driving in a school zone, effective August 1. The new ordinance will mean that making a call on a hands-free device will still be allowed.

"Because we've had so many accidents where cell phones have been a problem whether it be just talking or texting with the kids has been so big. That’s really a distraction. You are not just talking on your phone, you are having to look at your phone and type," Denison PD Lt. Mike Eppler said.

Officials hope the new laws will reduce the tragedies that occur due to distracted driving.
