Safe Family - Halloween

In today's Safe Family report, a few tips to make your Halloween a fun and safe experience.

With Halloween fast approaching, many parents are looking for ways to keep their little ones safe.

While trick or treating, the candy is the most exciting part of this holiday for most children.

•Be sure all candies are in original store wrappers, and don't accept homemade treats from any one you don't know

•Be sure that all young children are accompanied by an adult

•Watch children around any open flames, as most costumes are flammable

•Make sure your child understands how to cross a street safely. Stop, look, and listen at street corners.

"It doesn't hurt to go ahead and check your neighborhood. If you are going to come from outside the city from the county area to a neighborhood, it probably wouldn't hurt to check the sex offender registration list just so that you know,” Sgt. Bruce Dawsey of the Sherman Police Department says.

“If you are not familiar with the neighborhood, you don't want to send your kid to a child predator."

Sherman will hold its own annual Fright Fest, a safe alternative to door to door trick or treating, Saturday evening on the Municipal Lawn.
