Safe Family: Dorm fires

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fires on college campuses have increased dramatically in the last ten years. With students as busy as they are, sometimes a forgetful moment can lead to a fire. Dorm fires are dangerous because of the amount of students in one space.

But the good news is that colleges like Austin College in Sherman perform regular, random fire drills. During the surprise drill, students must evacuate the dorm and wait outside while Resident Assistants, called RA's, go from room to room making sure every student has responded to the alarm.

Austin College sophomore Craig Henry says students knew exactly what to do during a minor fire at William Dean Hall in the past. Another fire on campus, this time at Craig Hall, earlier this year, is yet another reminder of how important it is to know what to do in case of a fire emergency.
