LUFKIN, TX - Texas football lost a coaching legend this morning, when John Outlaw died at the age of 58.

According to Lufkin ISD officials, Outlaw collapsed at his home after a morning run and was rushed to Memorial Medical-Center-Lufkin, where he died at 5:53 a.m. Friday. A heart attack is suspected to be the cause of death.

Outlaw, who recently captured his 300th win this season, coached Lufkin for the past 17 seasons and led the Panthers to a state title in 2001.

Outlaw came to Lufkin in 1994 after coaching stints in Arkadelphia, Ark., where he won two state titles, and Sherman, where he led the Bearcats for seven seasons from 1998 to 1994. Outlaw captured five district championships, including a trip to the state quarterfinals in his last season with the Bearcats.
