Officers on Leave after Shooting Suspect

Video will be available shortly.

9-11-04- Two Paris police officers are on paid leave Saturday after shooting a man they say pointed a gun at them Friday night. The suspect was shot twice in the leg and is in stable condition Saturday evening.

It began just after 10:00 p.m. Friday when police say they received a 911 call from an apartment complex in the 600 block of Graham Street. The caller said 19 year old Tremaine Kellum was causing a disturbance in the parking lot and might have been trying to rob someone. When officers arrived, Kellum was armed with a pistol. Authorities say they told Kellum several times to drop his weapon, but instead, he pointed it at the officers. Two officers then shot Kellum in the leg, but that did not stop him. The suspect took off in a stolen vehicle until officers shot out the tire.

After he crashed the car, Kellum was arrested and transported to the hospital for treatment. No one else was seriously injured.

Saturday, Kellum is in stable condition but faces charges of attempted murder and aggrivated robbery.

The Texas Rangers and the Paris Police Department are investigating the shooting. The two officers who shot Kellum are on paid leave pending the outcome of that investigation.
