Senate Meets in Fisher Case

9-14-04 - OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Oklahoma senators are expected to return to the Capitol today to lay the groundwork for the first trial of an impeached state official in four decades.

Democratic Insurance Commissioner Carroll Fisher was impeached last week by the House on charges that he is corrupt, incompetent and neglected his duties.

The 64-year-old Fisher has denied any wrongdoing and says he will vigorously defend himself. He has repeatedly said he will not resign.

Oklahoma Supreme Court Chief Justice Joseph Watt will be installed today to preside over Fisher's trial.

The Senate will be presented five articles of impeachment from the House's Board of Managers; they are six lawmakers chosen by Speaker Larry Adair to prosecute the case.

Senators will be sworn in as jurors for the trial, the first of its kind since the ouster of Supreme Court Justice N.B. Johnson in a corruption case in 1965.
