ARDMORE, OK - Oklahoma law enforcement officers say they're expecting more people to hit the highway this holiday than last, so OHP troopers are increasing their patrols as well.
This is the time of year when thousands of families pack up their vehicles and head out on vacation for the last week of summer, and OHP anticipates about a 9 percent increase of travelers on the road this holiday weekend.
OHP will be out in full force this weekend patrolling the highways and waterways, and trooper Miles Anderson says they will be paying especially close attention to drivers.
"Our main focus will be on seat belt enforcement, intoxicated drivers and speed violations," Trooper Anderson says.
"We will have a lot more traffic then normal, so we try to put as many more troopers on the road as possible."
On Labor Day weekend a year ago, nine people were killed and 301 people were injured on Oklahoma roads.
Ardmore resident Amber Freeman is one of many people traveling this holiday weekend.
"We are going to Memphis, Tennessee, me and my husband are," she says.
Freeman says she will make sure she is not distracted while on the road.
"We will just pay attention to the speed limit since it's going to be an unfamiliar area to us and just watch all the other travelers on the road and kind of be cautious."
And Trooper Anderson says before traveling make sure you inspect your vehicle.
"Check your tires, check the oil, if you don't have a spare or a jack, get one," he says.
OHP Troopers say they want to make sure everyone is safe this holiday weekend, and if you see any erratic driving press star 5 on your cell phone and provide a description of the vehicle.
