New technology helps aid police
GAINESVILLE, TX-- As technology changes, law enforcement officials are upgrading equipment, from video tape, to crystal clear digital video and sound recordings. Now new digital video cameras have been installed in several Gainesville Patrol units to record every second that those vehicles are on the streets.

GAINESVILLE, TX-- As soon as Gainesville police cars leave the parking lot, their actions are recorded.

"Video is a great asset in the field for recording things as they happen, that can potentially be evidence in a serious crime," Sgt. Bobby Balthrop, said.

New state of the art equipment installed in four of the nine Gainesville patrol cars will now offer some the best and most accurate recordings, money can buy.

Mayor Glenn Loch, said, "We're trying to keep up because our police chief, and all of our captains and our officers here in town, help us to keep up. They tell us what's going on, what's new on the market, what we need to do here in our town."

A new system called, L3, digitally records every second that a police unit is in use.

At a cost of around $5,000 per unit, it's actually saving the department money on manpower.

"The system automatically uploads once an officer comes to the station and hits the hot point, that saves time, and it also saves man power, because supervisors no longer have to physically pull a video tape or a DV disk," Sgt. Balthrop, said.

The new system feeds the video to a server, where audio can be separated between the officer and any passengers in the car.

The filing system also saves the data for 90 days, and separates it for easy organization.

"You can pull it up by date, by the DVR number, by the unit number, by the officers’ name, or all three to narrow the search. Find the video, export it, file it, and then burn it onto a DVD, all within a matter of minutes," Sgt. Balthrop, said.

In addition to new technology, the department is also in the process of receiving their first K9 officer to assist in drug detection.

The dog’s handler and the new 4-legged officer are expected to complete training in Louisiana and hit the streets of Gainesville sometime in November.
