Ivan Remnants Threaten Texas

9-23-04 - HOUSTON (AP) Ivan is back in the Gulf of Mexico as a tropical storm that's expected to strike land somewhere along the coasts of Texas or Louisiana.

The regenerated storm was expected to make landfall by late today. It's expected to pack winds of 50 miles per hour and rain totaling five to ten inches.

Galveston County emergency management officials say the storm appears to be headed for the upper Texas Gulf Coast. They expect minor coastal flooding and beach erosion sometime today. Some low-lying coastal areas in the Galveston Bay area already saw some flooding during high tide yesterday.

The National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm warning for the Gulf Coast. It includes about 125 miles of Texas coastline in Jefferson, Chambers, Galveston, Brazoria and Matagorda counties.

Ivan and its remnants were blamed for at least 52 deaths in the United States and 70 in the Caribbean. Much of the destruction was caused by flooding.
