BONHAM, Tex.--Fannin County residents will soon be able to get discounts on their prescription drugs, thanks to the help of a little card. The program that's been around for some time and officials say it will benefit the county and its residents in the long run.

"All the person has to do is walk up, ask for the card and they'll give it to them," said Michael Uhl, Fannin County purchasing agent.

Uhl is referring to a discount card...that will allow residents in the county to get up to a 20% discount on commonly prescribed drugs.

Now he is trying to get the word out.

"I’m surprised not that many people know about it but the purchasing agents have a listserv and so I got a lot of positive feedback because its a win-win for the user and county," Uhl said.

The card is part of a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties. Implementing it won't cost the county any more money other than the monthly charges to the association. It can be used in all pharmacies from Honey Grove to Leonard.

"What I’ve looked at was where people can use it and there are 57,000 participating pharmacies in Fannin County every pharmacy that’s listed is participating."

Officials say while the cards are available for anyone, it is intended to help those who are uninsured and earn a low wage. One card will serve the whole family and can be picked up in several locations including the courthouse and the library at the beginning of November.

Uhl says those he has spoke to can't wait to get their hands on one.

"I started talking to local residents and said ‘Oh, this is a good deal and one citizen told me this would be great for her mother who has Alzheimer’s and the prescription bills are very high."
