Toby Keith’s Driver Shot on I-35

10-5-04 - CARROLLTON, Texas (AP) Carrollton police are appealing to the public for clues in the shooting of a 55-year-old bus driver for country-music star Toby Keith overnight.

George Hampton is listed in good condition at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas after he was shot in the left thigh while driving the bus on Interstate 35-E/Stemmons Freeway.

The shooting happened late last night as the bus was headed north near the President George Bush Turnpike in Carrollton.

Hampton told police he was hauling Keith's band equipment from Florida to Oklahoma when he heard what sounded like a shot outside the bus. Hampton was able to stop the bus safely.

Police say Keith was not aboard the bus, but three other people were. None were wounded, and investigators don't believe Keith was targeted.
