10-10-04- For troops in Iraq, a possible homecoming depends on what happens after January elections.

During a surprise visit with Marines there, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said troop levels might drop off if security improves and Iraqi government forces continue to expand and improve.

It's the first time Rumsfeld has openly mentioned the possibility of reducing U.S. troop strength as early as the beginning of next year.

Rumsfeld says violence in Iraq will probably get worse before the election.
