Decorated War Hero Welcomed Home

10-10-04- Specialist Bruce Himelright was the only American survivor after his patrol came under fire in Iraq in June. Sunday, the Fannin County soldier made a hero's return to Trenton, Texas.

Despite the rainy weather, around 100 people came to the Trenton High School gymnasium to pay tribute to Himelright and welcome him back to his hometown.

The mayor declared October 10, "Bruce Himelright Day" in Trenton.

The Navy veteran of four years joined the National Guard recently and was sent to Iraq in January. He was on patrol with two other soldiers in late June in the Iraqi city of Balad, about 85 miles north of Baghdad. The soldiers came under fire, leaving Himelright wounded and his two comrades dead. He was wounded in the hip, but his mother believes his faith in God saved his life.
