Flu Threat Serious in OK Nursing Homes

Video will be available shortly.

10-14-04 - OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A shortage of flu vaccine could mean more than half of Oklahoma nursing home residents don't get vaccinated this year.

A major supplier to state nursing homes is Sequoyah Pharmacy Group in Oklahoma City. But the business says eleven-thousand doses of vaccine it ordered haven't been received.

There are about 23,000 residents in the state's nursing homes.

Oklahoma is one of many states with a shortage of flu vaccine after British officials revoked the license of a major US supplier of the vaccine.

The state Health Department is asking healthy people not to get flu shots. The department is also asking private companies that bought the flu shot for employees to donate their supply so high risk populations such as children, senior citizens and health care workers can be vaccinated.
