12-1-04 - Inmates at the Johnston County jail spent an especially cold night behind bars this week when heating went out at the decaying facility.

The heater was repaired on Wednesday; one day after jailers had passed out blankets to inmates. It’s just the latest in a long line of problems with the jail. County officials concede the building isn't suitable for it's purpose.

But the solution is right around the corner at the county's new state of the art jail, which is virtually complete. The only delay is that the county can't afford to staff it up to the state jail inspector's standards. An inspector will meet with county officials on Monday to work out a compromise so that they can go ahead and open the new jail as soon as possible.
