Out of the Game, but Not Out of Player's Hearts

Video will be available shortly.

10-21-04 - A Southern Oklahoma football coach won’t be on the sidelines at Thursday night’s big game. Still recovering from a serious illness, Coach Jim Dixon of the Sulphur Bulldogs won’t be able to guide his players on the field. However, he will cheer them on from the stands.

Doctors told the family of Coach Dixon he wouldn’t survive, shortly after he fell ill just two weeks into the school year. The coach was diagnosed with encephalitis, a viral infection that causes inflammation of the brain.

Now, the coach is working towards complete recovery. Players say Coach Dixon is their hero, inspiring them to player harder and better. The team plays their rival; the Davis Wolves Thursday night in Davis. The coach says he wouldn’t miss the game for the world.

Coach Dixon says he hopes to be back at work after the holidays.
