WHITE HOUSE (AP) - President Bush is reportedly set to name New
York's former top cop as his Cabinet secretary in charge of
protecting the homeland.
A senior administration official says the president has chosen
ex-commissioner Bernard Kerik to replace Homeland Security
Secretary Tom Ridge, who quit Tuesday. An announcement is expected
tomorrow.
Kerik is a one-time narcotics officer who headed the New York
police force when the World Trade Center was attacked. He was
recruited by Bush to train Iraq's police force, served on the
Nine-Eleven commission and also campaigned for Bush's re-election.
Meantime, Bush is also losing his U-N ambassador. An administration official says John Danforth -- who has served in that post since June -- is resigning.
The former Republican senator was among the candidates to
succeed Colin Powell as secretary of state. But Bush chose national
security chief Condoleezza Rice instead.
Earlier today, Bush named Nebraska Governor Mike Johanns to be his second-term agriculture secretary, replacing Ann Veneman.
