Trains Cutting Marietta in Half

Video will be available shortly.

12-8-04 - There is train trouble in Marietta and even police are having problems getting something done. Recently, trains have blocked all three of the city's rail crossings for more than 30 minutes at a time.

The problem is that the city sits on a side-track site - a place where trains pull off the main track and stop to allow other trains to pull through. Residents complain that at times the stopped trains cut the city in two, and in some cases, force emergency workers to find alternate routes.

A city ordinance demands that the crossings be blocked for no more than five minutes, and Marietta police have issued numerous tickets to Burlington Northern-Santa Fe but that hasn't stopped the problem.

A representative from the company says they try to cooperate with the city as much as possible, but that the only long-term solution would be for Marietta to construct an overpass at the crossing.
