Gift from the Heart; Retiree Labors for Local Kids

Video will be available shortly.

12-14-04 – He doesn’t have a beard or wear a red suit, but over the past five years, a Bonham man has made Christmas wishes come true for more than eleven hundred local children.

Mike Conner collects used bikes from police departments, junk yards, and donations all year long. The 75-year-old retiree rebuilds the bikes and gives them away to needy children in Fannin County every Christmas.

Conner started rebuilding bikes for a children’s charity in Mexico more than five years ago, but after the first year, he decided local kids needed his help too.

Conner has been recognized for his work by the City of Bonham and the Governor of Texas, but he says watching a grateful child ride one of his bikes is thanks enough.

This year, Conner will give 86 bikes away from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Congregational Methodist Church in Bonham on Saturday, December 18th.
