Few Take Advantage of Free Shelter

Video will be available shortly.

12-15-04 – As temperatures fell overnight, local shelters prepared for a rush that never came. Workers at the Salvation Army in Sherman made thirty beds available in their dorms, but few took advantage of the warm place to sleep.

Early Wednesday morning, workers say the regulars came in for shelter and meals, but fewer people than expected checked in. Overnight Tuesday, temperatures dropped into the low 20s and mid-teens.

According to the Salvation Army, public donations are on schedule this year, providing funds for extra sheets, blankets and towels. However, workers they depend on their annual bell-ringing campaign to raise money to offer aide to more people as the weather gets colder.
