11-3-04 - WASHINGTON (AP) Sen. John Kerry has called President Bush Wednesday morning to concede White House race.
The phone call came after a long, tense night of vote counting and with Ohio's 20 electoral votes at stake. Bush has maintained a lead of about 136,000 votes in Ohio.
The victory gives Bush a second term after an election in which he promised steady and strong war-time leadership, as Kerry offered a fresh-start approach to Iraq and joblessness.
Sources said the conversation lasted less than five minutes. They say Kerry told Bush, "Congratulations, Mr. President."
A Democratic source says Kerry told Bush that the country was too divided, and that Bush agreed.
The official says Kerry added, "We really have to do something about it."
