11-4-04 – Voters in Bryan County have approved a measure that could attract well-known restaurants to the area.

Sixty nine percent of voters approved liquor by the drink proposition Tuesday. Local economic development officials say without the sale of liquor, most national-chain restaurants would not have considered Durant to open up shop.

Right now, the Chili’s restraint chain is considering moving in west of Durant. Two other big-name chains have also expressed an interest.

Economic development officials estimate the new restaurants could create up to 100 new jobs and attract more visitors to Bryan County.

The liquor by the drink proposal has failed in two previous elections. After Tuesday’s landslide, towns like Durant can begin serving liquor in 20 days.

Bryan County is the 42nd county in Oklahoma to pass this kind of measure in the state.
