Indecent Exposure Equals 30 Year Sentence

11-4-04 - A Grayson County jury sentenced Daniel Williams, 54, from Sherman, to 30 years in prison this week for one count of Indecency with a Child by Exposure. The charge arose from a report made to Denison police June 15, 2001. A Pottsboro woman reported that a man fitting Williams’ description had exposed himself to the woman and her children, ages 8 and 3, while they were washing their car at a Denison carwash. Although the man fled the scene, the woman was able to identify the suspect’s vehicle, which bore the insignia of his employer. Williams’ employer verified that Williams had been driving the vehicle that day. The woman and one of her children identified Williams from a photo line-up. Williams testified in his own defense and denied that he was at that car wash that day.

In the punishment phase of the trial, jurors heard evidence that Williams had been to prison on 5 separate occasions since 1971. Williams prior convictions caused the punishment range for the offense to be raised to a minimum of 25 years, with a maximum of life in prison.

“This was a career offender, with a long record,” said Grayson County Attorney Joe Brown. “ Hopefully this will be the last time he is out of jail to commit another offense.”

Judge Ray Grisham, District Judge for the 336th Judicial District Court presided while Assistant County Attorney Karla R. Baugh prosecuted the case. Sherman attorney Garland Cardwell represented Williams.
