DENISON, TX - Bloomberg Business Week published an article titled "America's Most Extreme Places" featuring surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, and of towns 20,000 or bigger, the one with the highest percentage of divorcees is right here in Texoma.

The city of Denison is gaining national attention once again, but this time the reason is no laughing matter.

"Statistically, smaller towns usually have people marrying sooner. High school sweethearts, whatever reason, they just get married at an earlier age," said Grayson County psychology professor Carla Fanning.

According to a study by the U.S. Census Bureau from 2007 to 2009, one out of every five Denison residents has been divorced. That's a divorce rate of 20.3 percent, the highest in the nation among cities with 20,000 people or more. That's ten points higher than the national average, which is just 10.6 percent.

Fanning says that the problem with young people getting married is that they still don't fully know what they want to do with their lives.

"A lot of what happens to you between the ages of 18 and 25 stands out more than any other period of your life as being a lot of what forms and shapes who you are when you get older," said Fanning.

But being young is not the only reason for increased divorce rates.

"Fifty years ago, divorce was a bad word."

Sociology professor Sherry Hayes says that the one of the main reasons divorce rates have increased over the last fifty years is because people have become so used to hearing about it.

"Because the stigma of divorce has diminished over time, and since it doesn't carry that negative connotation, then it's easier to get a divorce," said Hayes.

And although love is an important component in any marriage, Fanning says friendship is what keeps people together.

"You need to have things in common with the person that's going to see you through the tough times and the boring times and cranky times, and to see if you want the same things out of life, and if you can get along, and that's hard to do. It's easy to say," said Fanning.

One obvious problem is the ignorance and stupidity of a bunch of morons who blame other states or towns for Denison's problems. Who in their right mind would want to live with such "blame everyone but me" crybabies? Just face it. Denison is full of uneducated, (Just look at the spelling in these comments) dopers, drunks and "easy" women. The women, these days, are more likely to cheat than the men. Nearly every case of divorce I've seen (friends or family) in the last ten years was a result of the wife cheating. If the court system would punish the cheating spouse by awarding most property, child custody and possessions to the non-cheating spouse, things might be different. As it stands, women know they will come out of a divorce with much more than the ex-husband, while moving on to the next dumb a** that will support her until she meets the next guy with more money. Guys that cheat should also lose everything, and pay dearly... Gotta love the idiot that tried to spell stench. LOL!

evrybody says it is fixable, but i bet the people that are saying these type of things have never had to deal with the problems of marraige after the first one......like trying to raise someone elses children or dealing with the signigficant others family constantly looking down at or comparing them or there partners past problems, exes, friends, and so forth.we are not living in the fortys or fiftys where everything was til "death do us part" think back- how many divorce lawyers did you see advertising then compared to now? when your mom&dad and grandparents got married there was this little thing called respect for each other.now "respect" is just a 7 letter word that doesnt seem to have no meaning anymore!!!!!!.

they need to mention that Grayson Co. is the meth head capital of the USA , and Denison it's step child. Denison is a hop, skip, jump from the casinos in Oklahoma where dreams are shattered daily.., All the low income drunks and drug addicts that cannot afford to make it into Oklahoma, end up in Denison, all the drunks and drug addicts running from Oklahoma move to Denison... do the math, Denison is in effect the "Del Rio'' of N. Texas... If Denison would use public money promoting a better life, instead of an unneeded ignorant bigger than life bust to idol worship Eisenhower at Loy Park, we would not be seeing this article.and we could be discussing the other little towns surrounding Sherman as the meth havens we need to crack down on with the help of the Texas Ranger and the TFI, instead of the local cops letting things go to the wayside..

I bet the Denison divorce rate is nothing compared to that of Howe, TX. Seems divorce is the current "band-waggon" in Howe!

MEND IT DON'T END IT! Marriage is a two way street, not a highway and a bike path. If it matters to you work at it, if it doesn't, then don't.........Vince Vaughn. Nothing ends nice or it wouldn't end....Tom Cruise....If love never lasts forever, tell me what's forever for! MMM
