Officer's Father Dies in Accident

11-9-04 - The father of a Sherman police sergeant was killed in a head-on accident Tuesday afternoon, along the access road of U.S. 75 in Sherman. It happened near the Fisher Control plant in south Sherman.

Sherman police say 66 year old Joe Smith of Sherman died when a Ford Explorer failed to yield to the pick-up Smith was riding in as it was trying to enter the on-ramp of the highway.

The driver of the pick-up was the victim's son, 36 year old Terry Smith of Pottsboro. Terry was transported by medical helicopter to Parkland hospital in Dallas with serious injuries.

Both victims in the pick-up are relatives of Sherman Police Sergeant Charley Smith. Sgt. Smith is the Public Information Officer for the police department.

The driver of the Ford Explorer, 24 year old Patty Kay McCoy of Dallas, was taken to Wilson N. Jones Medical Center in Sherman with serious injuries.

The accident is still under investigation.
