Firefighters Battle House Fire

11-14-04- Firefighters battled flames in an old, abandoned house in the 1600 block of Elm Street in Durant early Sunday evening. Neighbors called firefighters when they saw flames shooting out of the home's second story windows.

Durant Fire Department officials say no one was living in the house, but neighbors say it had become a popular hang-out for juveniles.

It took firefighters more than an hour to get the fire under control. They say the wood cielings and walls made the flames difficult to control.

The state fire marshal has been called in to investigate.
