11-23-04 – NEW YORK (AP) Dan Rather has announced he will step down as "CBS Evening News" anchor next March. Rather will end his stay in the anchor seat on the 24th anniversary of the day he took over the job from Walter Cronkite.
He's come under increasing fire in the wake of a CBS report on President Bush's National Guard service; a report based on documents that were later called into question.
A CBS statement says Rather will continue to work for the network full-time. He'll report for both "60 Minutes" programs, and handle other assignments for the news division.
