11-24-04 – A former Colbert police officer, convicted of using excessive force during an arrest, was sentenced in Federal Court Wednesday morning. Richard Wyrick will serve 57 months in federal prison.
In August, a federal jury convicted Wyrick, saying he went too far when he arrested 67-year-old James Murray last July. The arrest was caught on a Denison convenience store security camera.
The incident followed a pursuit from Cartwright, Oklahoma. The tape shows the officer punching Murray. Murray suffered a broken hip in the scuffle.
Wyrick is ordered to surrender by 2 p.m. on January 14, 2005. Judge Richard Schell said in court that a prison will be found close to Durant, Oklahoma so Wyrick can be close to his family.
Two years of supervised release will follow Wyrick's prison sentence, and a fine will also be imposed. The amount of that fine is yet to be determined, because the court has not been able to locate Murray to get his input.
