2-3-05 - EAGLETOWN, Okla. (AP) – A high school basketball game ended tragically in southeast Oklahoma Tuesday night with the death of a student-athlete
The state medical examiner's office says an Eagletown basketball player who collapsed and died during a game this week had an enlarged heart.
Fifteen-year-old sophomore RJ Pennon collapsed while sitting on the bench during a game against Fort Towson, in Choctaw County.
Medical investigator Kevin Rowland says it appears Pennon's heart went into an irregular rhythm and didn't recover. Rowland says an enlarged heart is a condition that probably wouldn't be detected in a regular medical checkup or a sports physical.
Eagletown school officials say counselors and clergy are being made available to students.
Eagletown is in Mc Curtain county, near the Arkansas border.
