DURANT, Okla. -- A four-year-old boy was run over by a car in a horrible accident Saturday morning in Durant. Lieutenant Johnny Rutherford says the child was playing outside in the 500 block of West Mississippi when a woman who lived with the family backed over him.

According to police, the woman did not know she hit the boy and left the scene.

The child's mom found him lying outside in the driveway.

Four-year-old David Shores was playing in a driveway Saturday morning when he was hit by a car. According to Durant Police, that car was driven by Milissa Kelley.

"I have to say if it was me I’m very sorry for doing it. It was done by an accident." Milissa says.

Kelley lives in the house with David and his mother. She says she backed out of the driveway Saturday morning but doesn't think she hit the child.

"If it was me, I would have felt. You'd of had to. I didn't hear scream, nothing. Just backed out and left. Came back all police around my house saying are you aware of what’s going on and I said ‘no’ and they said the kid’s been hit."

Kelley says she did not even know David was outside when she got in her car that morning.

"The baby was just in there playing with Christmas lights two seconds before this happened," Milissa says.

Stella Barnes is a family friend who lives nearby. She says Kelley would never harm anyone else intentionally.

"I believe it was an accident, I do. Milissa would ever do something like that on purpose."

Durant Police captain Chris Cicio says the evidence does show Kelley backed over the child in her blue Dodge Avenger.

"According to investigation, officers who worked it are pretty confident her vehicle was involved in the accident. There were marks on back of vehicle that were consistent with child being struck."

Cicio says no charges will be filed against Kelley.

“There did not seem to be any malicious intent or criminal activity involved."

David's family was unavailable for comment, but Cicio has advice to keep this from happening to other families.

“Whenever you are leaving a residence with small children, it’s always good to look around vehicle and know where all children are to know where they are at. Also, teach your children not to play near the street or behind vehicles."

David was taken to the hospital in Durant, and then transferred to Children's Hospital in Dallas, where he was put in the intensive care unit. He has since recovered and is said to be in fair condition at this time.

John from Denison, there is a difference between taking care of your children and being over protective!! My child also played outside at age 4, in a fenced yard away from the highway and driveway!! He also knew right from wrong at age 4, but guess where he ended up, in the driveway and BECAUSE I was there watching over him that was as far as he got!! Kids will be kids, that is why they have PARENTS to watch over them!! Or at least some of them do!

John from denison, did this yard have a fence around it?

First off my child played out side when you he was four i tought him not to play around cars and to stay in the yard you people are the worst parents you must keep your kids in the house and hold ther hand when they play o dont get hurt, over protective they have to learn i am not saying let them play in the highway but my goodness let them play o ya and they dont need a helmit to swing on the swingset

As sad as it getting to be there are so many damn parents out there that don't deserve to be parents, they are too wrapped up in their own lives or busy doing drugs and drinking and stupid crap like that, that they just flat out don't care where their kids are or what they are doing, needless to say I live in the area of where this happened and there have been numerous occassions that I have seen young children of this age just wondering up and down the roads not paying any attention to cars or what might be coming down the road or running up to stray animals to pet not knowing if they will be attacked or not and the parents let them do it or are too busy to open their eyes and see what their child is doing. They just do not care so why do they bother to even have children, DHS doesn't do anything cause they already have several cases envolving kids with careless parents.I feel just as in divorce court counciling is mandatory before divorce so how about counciling before children????

This story makes no sense. If she was a neighbor, then how does she live in the same house as the mom and the child who was ran over? It does sound STUPID, but look where it happened? Most 4 year olds are bigger than a speed bump...a potential hearing impairment has nothing to do with feeling a bump. Good thing the child has recovered after being in ICU a few hours according to the news after being shipped to Dallas. Hope someone has some insurance, more than likely not.

Ok, so she had a hearing problem, but if you run something over you are going to feel a bump and get out to see what you hit, prayers go out to the family

seems the lady had hearing problems and the mom dont care enough. dhs... on the scene!!!

Yes 4 is certainly not old enough to be outside without a parent. My son is 4 and I would never allow that. Also, I would think you would notice running over someone. How odd is that?

Posted by: OMG Location: Ardmore on Dec 10, 2007 at 04:20 PM
She didn't know she had run over him. How stupid does that sound?? No bump felt or scream from the child? And where was his parents? Carelessness on all involved and my prayers go out to that little boy!

didn't the neighbor feel a "bump"??????? Prayers to all involved.
