DURANT, Okla. -- A four-year-old boy was run over by a car in a horrible accident Saturday morning in Durant. Lieutenant Johnny Rutherford says the child was playing outside in the 500 block of West Mississippi when a woman who lived with the family backed over him.

According to police, the woman did not know she hit the boy and left the scene.

The child's mom found him lying outside in the driveway.

Four-year-old David Shores was playing in a driveway Saturday morning when he was hit by a car. According to Durant Police, that car was driven by Milissa Kelley.

"I have to say if it was me I’m very sorry for doing it. It was done by an accident." Milissa says.

Kelley lives in the house with David and his mother. She says she backed out of the driveway Saturday morning but doesn't think she hit the child.

"If it was me, I would have felt. You'd of had to. I didn't hear scream, nothing. Just backed out and left. Came back all police around my house saying are you aware of what’s going on and I said ‘no’ and they said the kid’s been hit."

Kelley says she did not even know David was outside when she got in her car that morning.

"The baby was just in there playing with Christmas lights two seconds before this happened," Milissa says.

Stella Barnes is a family friend who lives nearby. She says Kelley would never harm anyone else intentionally.

"I believe it was an accident, I do. Milissa would ever do something like that on purpose."

Durant Police captain Chris Cicio says the evidence does show Kelley backed over the child in her blue Dodge Avenger.

"According to investigation, officers who worked it are pretty confident her vehicle was involved in the accident. There were marks on back of vehicle that were consistent with child being struck."

Cicio says no charges will be filed against Kelley.

“There did not seem to be any malicious intent or criminal activity involved."

David's family was unavailable for comment, but Cicio has advice to keep this from happening to other families.

“Whenever you are leaving a residence with small children, it’s always good to look around vehicle and know where all children are to know where they are at. Also, teach your children not to play near the street or behind vehicles."

David was taken to the hospital in Durant, and then transferred to Children's Hospital in Dallas, where he was put in the intensive care unit. He has since recovered and is said to be in fair condition at this time.
