Safe Family: Driving in inclement weather

By  |

It's time to take extra precaution on the roads when it's wet and icy. Ryan Loyd has some refresher tips to keep you and your family safe on the road.

The icy and rainy conditions pose extra threats to people when out on the road. That's why many people say it's better to just slow down and get to where you're going in one piece.

Now that southern Oklahoma and other parts of Texoma are beginning to see the wintry mix once again, police say it's time to refresh yourself on how to drive in these conditions.

"Allow yourself space. If you slide, don't panic. Accidents are made worse by panic," Sherman PD Sgt. D.M. Hampton says.

Sgt. Hampton says to play it safe.

“First of all, take some time in the morning to pay attention to the weather and road conditions. Officers know the conditions, bridges do freeze."

Sometimes, even slowing down isn't full-proof, but police say it will help control situations that can quickly turn in an instant.

Above all, if you don't have to get out in weather like this, don't.

"It's hard to get into an accident when you're not on the road," Sgt. Hampton says.
