DURANT, Okla. -- The city of Durant has been recognized with the 2007 Outstanding Economic Development Award. The Oklahoma Department of Commerce presented "Team Durant" with the award on Tuesday.

Team Durant is made up of community leaders who work together to make each project successful. Over the last year, Durant was awarded six community development grants. Those grants were used to provide street, rail, water, and sewer infrastructure to six new manufacturing companies in Durant.

Those facilities created 300 new jobs.

"When you create jobs, then you're improving the quality of life for our citizens, and that's the bottom line. Team Durant is economic development at it's very best," executive director of economic development Tommy Kramer says.

The goal of the Durant Industrial Authority is to bring more businesses to the area.

economic develpment...ya right all the have done for durant was double the rent and land. If so many people are working in durant how come the welfare is still so high there. And the jobs that are there pay just barely above min wage. They may be growing the poverty rate is growing too.
