Cheap Meal - Message From Farmers

Fannin County farmers were practically giving away meals in downtown Bonham Monday - bringing attention to the plight of the family farmer. For 37 cents, you could buy a hamburger, chips, and a cookie. The local farm bureau says the meal is actually worth $2, but a farmer only makes 37 cents.

The profits are eaten up by processors, grocery stores, and distributors, with the farmer making the least.

Farm bureau members are hoping to raise awareness that farm subsidies, which keep many local farmers from going bankrupt, are in danger of disappearing at the state and federal level.

The Fannin County farm bureau chose Monday for the event because its National Food Checkout Day - 38 days into the year, it represents how many days the average person would have to work to have the money to feed a family of four.
