2-8-05 - Two streets in downtown Gainesville were shut down Tuesday afternoon after a city crew found a grenade inside a storm drain. A Denton bomb squad responded to the intersection of California and Commerce streets, in the end determining that the grenade was not live.

It is likely a relic of a World War II era training camp that used to be located outside of Gainesville. City officials speculate the grenade had been in the storm drain for years.

By 4:45pm, the bomb squad had removed the grenade casing and re-opened the intersection. The grenade was taken to Denton to be x-rayed.
