2-14-05 - A rare plea deal has allowed a Lamar County sex offender to live across the street from a Sherman elementary school. William Brent Jeter lives across the street from Wakefield Elementary, but last fall he accepted a plea deal.

He pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a child in exchange for probation. A judge then waived the usual restriction of living within one thousand feet of a child safety zone.

An out-going assistant district attorney brokered that deal. The newly elected D.A. is taking a 2nd look at the situation, with plans on reinstating the restriction.

Prosecutors also want Jeter to move to Paris, where the offense occurred, so their probation officers can keep a better eye on him. If Jeter doesn't agree to these amendments, his case will go in front of a judge. If that happens, it could be several weeks before he has to move.
