2-26-05- She is a mother of two children and a newlywed, but in less than two weeks, Lavana Ward will have to leave her children and her new husband for a war zone in Afghanistan.
Ward has been a reservist in the U.S. Army for two years and was notified of her deployment with the Denison National Guard back in December.
Saturday, friends and family gathered in downtown Sherman to say goodbye to the Army Specialist. A nine year veteran, Ward says she volunteered to go to Afghanistan to serve with the rest of her unit.
In Afghanistan, she will be a driver for a commander along with doing other humanitarian work.
Ward has been married for just five months. Her children are 12 and 18 years old. She expects to leave in the next two weeks and is scheduled to return in the summer of 2006.
Specialist Ward is also the only woman in her National Guard unit out of Denison, Texas.
