2-28-05 - Fire broke out inside a Durant industry on Monday afternoon, forcing firefighters to shut down an area around the Durant Pickling Plant due to hazardous material concerns.
The fire began around 3pm inside the warehouse, which is across from the Durant Municipal Airport. The flames are now out, but firefighters say there is visible smoke damage. Their main concern is an acid-based chemical that was inside the plant. Initially they blocked off an area of more than 100 yards around the plant, but that radius has since been reduced.
The Durant fire marshal is investigating, but says they will not be able to determine a cause until tomorrow when the hot spots are out.
The business has been shut down for the day due to smoke and fire damage inside the warehouse.
