02-28-05 – A proposed law from Ardmore’s Gregg Piatt would give Oklahomans a tax-free week beginning the first Monday in August. Texas already has a tax-free weekend, and it always brings a large amount of shoppers from north of the Red River.
Some businesses in Oklahoma put on their own tax-free weekend, but are forced to eat the money. The proposed bill would take taxes off items for a full week, something that would hurt several Texas businesses. The outlet mall in Gainesville says 70% of their business of tax-free weekend comes from Oklahoma.
The bill passed the house by a 96-0 vote last week, and is now headed to the senate.
