3-2-05 – A candidate, running for mayor, may be one of the youngest in Sherman’s history. Grayson County College student, Will Blackburn, is 21 years old and says he wants to run the city.

He is the youngest person to run for mayor in at least the last 20 years. Will says he wants to represent his age group on the city government level. Although, he is facing financial challenges, the student says he is serious about his candidacy.

Sherman Mayor Julie Ellis Starr is filing for re-election Wednesday. She says she would like to see younger people represented in city government, but recommends Will run for one of two unopposed City Council positions instead.

Mayor Starr says she is concerned the young man’s candidacy will force a run-off race and cost the city thousands of dollars.

Bill Magers, another candidate for mayor, welcomes Will’s opposition; saying it could bring new voters to the election.

Sherman voters will pick their new mayor May 7th.
