Ringling Coach Improving - Still Critical

3-2-05 - A local coach seriously injured in a horse riding accident last month is doing better. Ringling coach Rick Gandy broke his neck and has suffered paralysis from the neck down ever since.

He had successful surgery to fuse his vertebrae last week, and over the weekend he experienced some feeling in his arm. He'll undergo a tracheotomy on Friday to help his breathing.

The accident happened on Tuesday when Gandy was trying to mend a hurt cow on his ranch. He was thrown from the horse he was riding on and hit his head.

The accident has left the entire town in shock. Gandy has been with the program for over three decades, and just two years ago, he coached the Blue Devils to a state championship.

Ringling High Schools says they have received calls from coaches across the state offering condolences.
