Officer Resigns - Child Porn Allegations

Video will be available shortly.

3-4-05 - A 15-year veteran of the Sherman Police Department resigned on Friday – amid an FBI investigation into the possession of child pornography. Lt. Todd Smithers was put on paid leave on February 10th, when the criminal and internal investigation began.

Chief Tom Watt told reporters late Friday afternoon that Smithers' conduct has been unbecoming of an officer, and he would have been fired if he had not resigned first. The chief will not say why Smithers is under investigation, other than that it is a criminal matter that federal authorities are looking into.

First News has confirmed through multiple sources that the FBI is looking into whether Smithers possessed child pornography - a federal offense.

Smithers has served as the public information liason in the past. Before his suspension, he was the officer in charge of department standards.
