Rice Confirmed As State Secretary

1-26-05 - Oklahoma Senators Jim Inhofe and Tom Coburn
joined the majority today as the Senate overwhelmingly confirmed
Condoleezza Rice as secretary of state.

The vote was 85-to-13, with 12 Democrats and Independent James
Jeffords voting no. The 13 votes against her confirmation is the highest number of no votes for a secretary of state nominee since World War Two.

The opponents argue that as a main architect of U-S policy in Iraq, Rice shares the blame for mistakes and the deaths of U-S forces there.

Rice will be the first black woman to serve as the nation's top diplomat.

She's expected to be sworn in this evening at the White House and take her place at the State Department tomorrow.
